If you are around here, it is more than likely that you are organizing a trip to Morocco and you are wondering what to expect with the weather in Morocco.

Of course, not everything is desert in these parts, and you must come with the right clothing.

While it is true that in general, it is a climate that does not give surprises, before traveling you should know that Morocco’s environment is as diverse as the country. And so should your expectations: varied and flexible.

So that you have no doubt about what you will find in each season and area, we have prepared a special climate for Morocco.

Let’s get down to business.

Morocco’s climate in general

The peculiar geography of this country makes Morocco’s climate match its topographic variety, which offers from its famous deserts to beaches, mountains, valleys with seasonal rivers…

This makes the climatology very varied and three main types of climate can be distinguished in Morocco: Mediterranean, Atlantic, and desert.

Let’s learn a little more about each of them.

Mediterranean climate in Morocco

Weather in Morocco, hot or cold

In Morocco, the northern coastal areas experience a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

In other words: little rain and a lot of heat from June to September and a lot of rain and little heat in winter from December to February.

For example, on a typical summer day in cities you might want to visit such as Tangier, Tetouan, or Rabat, temperatures can exceed 30°C and even reach 40°C on some occasions.

And no rain at all.

If you can only go to the north during that season, perhaps the best plan is to look for relief on a beach to compensate.

In contrast, on a cold winter day the average temperature is about 10-15°C during the day, which can drop to 5°C or less at night. Nothing serious, that’s the truth.

During the winter most of the precipitation comes in the form of rain, something you may find uncomfortable, but it has a not inconsiderable advantage if you like nature: the landscape becomes greener and lusher.

What about the equinoxes?

Both in spring and autumn, the Moroccan Mediterranean climate is very pleasant: the months from March to May and the period from September to November offer moderate temperatures with maximum temperatures ranging between 20°C and 25°C and little rainfall.

Rain may fall, but infrequently.

And we go down the map…

The Atlantic climate in Morocco

Temperatures in Morocco

This climate is the one that prevails in the western coastal areas. So that we understand: it is what you will find in places like Casablanca, Essaouira, and Agadir.

The Atlantic climate in Morocco is characterized by mild summers, mild winters and moderate rainfall throughout the year. In short: the weather conditions will be warm in all senses all twelve months of the year.

This means that during the summer months – from June to September – temperatures in the Atlantic areas of Morocco are not extreme and usually range between 20°C and 30°C.

This is because the influence of the Atlantic Ocean helps to keep temperatures under control.

And best of all: it also provides refreshing breezes.

This also applies to the winter – from December to February – and its temperatures, which, thanks to the proximity of the ocean, hover around 15-20°C during the day and are usually around 8-12°C at night.

As for rainfall, ditto: days can be cloudy and moderate rainfall occurs during this season.

Spring – from March to May – and autumn – from September to November – are pleasant seasons in the Atlantic areas of Morocco because temperatures are mild with maximum temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C.

These periods may also experience some rainfall, yes, but they are certainly less frequent compared to winter.

If you are looking for pleasant weather and activities such as surfing, the Atlantic climate areas of Morocco are your destination, especially in spring and summer.

And let’s finish this special climate of Morocco with the variant that we lived in first person in Kam Kam Dunes ….

Desert climate in Morocco

Temperatures in the Moroccan desert

One of the charms of the deserts of Morocco, especially Erg Chebbi, is to experience its desert climate: here the sun and the temperature are two elements with which one lives in a special way.

They almost have a personality of their own.

Of course, it is better not to come in July and August, as the charm melts.

Literally.

If you have a trip to the Moroccan desert on your bucket list, chances are your mind is picturing sights like riding a camel in the orange sand dunes with a turban in the wind.

Or maybe you are attracted by the silence and the immensity of its starry sky.

Whatever the reason, what is clear is that a trip to the desert is not just any experience but a special experience: of its remote location, its extreme climate, and its exuberant nature, nothing like other habitats on the planet.

And of course, a special trip requires special preparation, so we have prepared a list of questions you should ask yourself before setting out on your trip to the Moroccan desert.

Let’s get down to business.

What is the best desert in Morocco?

Trip to the Moroccan desert

Let’s start at the beginning: in the Moroccan Sahara there are three deserts and, depending on what you are looking for, one or the other will suit you.

The Agafay desert is the closest to Marrakech, the city through which most travelers usually pass. However, you should know that it has no dunes but is a desert climate plateau with more stone than sand.

We also have Erg Chigaga, which is already almost 400 km from Marrakech: its dunes are fine, but there are still a lot of stone extensions.

And we arrived at the jewel in the crown: Erg Chebbi, where Kam Kam Dunes is located; we are 550 kilometers from Marrakech, but we assure you that the immensity of its dunes makes the trip very worthwhile.

And of course, this should lead you to your next question….

How to get to the Sahara Desert in Morocco?

The most comfortable way to reach the Moroccan desert is with a driver who knows the terrain from one of the main tourist destinations such as Marrakech or Fez.

We offer it and it is a very enjoyable service because it allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery. Our drivers are excellent guides and know the itinerary and its interesting stories perfectly.

You can also rent a car and drive yourself or take a bus to Merzouga, in Erg Chebbi.

Alternatively, you can fly to Errachadia airport, from where you have a two-hour drive to Merzouga. If you like the time savings involved, check the flights carefully, the frequency is discreet.

Now that you have arrived…

What are the best activities to do on a trip to the Moroccan desert?

There are all kinds of activities you can do in the Moroccan desert that you should not miss; from the queen of experiences that is the camel ride, sandboarding, riding the dunes on a quad bike, and even asking your sweetheart for her hand.

And of course, stay in an authentic and chic camp like Kam Kam Dunes.

We tell you a little more about the accommodation.

What is the best accommodation in the Moroccan desert?

As you can imagine, we are going to recommend you to stay in the middle of the desert in a camp, the more authentic the better.

This does not mean that you have to give up comforts such as having a haima just for you with a private bathroom, all nicely decorated and with luxury amenities; it is what some call glamping and Kam Kam Dunes is just like that.

To sleep in a haima built in the traditional way and with all the details in the purest Moroccan style, but with a boho-chic touch like ours, there is no reason to be uncomfortable.

In Erg Chebbi there are more camps, yes, but in most of them you have to share a tent. They are usually western made and decorated and many of them are not close to the dunes.

Camp in the Moroccan desert

What is the best time to travel to the Moroccan desert?

This one is easy: the worst time for a trip to the Moroccan desert is summer.

As you can imagine, the temperatures are hellish. In fact, Kam Kam Dunes is closed during the months of July and August.

And the best time to go to the Moroccan desert? Undoubtedly the months from October to May are the most pleasant here because the heat is not so hot and at night it is not yet cold.

What should I pack for a trip to the Moroccan desert?

Camel ride in the desert

Whenever you come, there are must-haves to include in your suitcase on a trip to the Moroccan desert. Take note:

  • A head scarf or a cap, but better the scarf because if there is a blizzard it protects you better.
  • Sun protection cream.
  • A water bottle with a filter for refilling.
  • Long sleeves in case it gets cooler at night or to protect you from the sun.
  • If you come in winter, a warm coat and long-sleeved pajamas for the evenings.
  • Comfortable shoes to move around the sand with ease.
  • Good camera, because the chromatic spectacle deserves it.
  • If you get dizzy, pills to prevent dizziness.

This and a good dose of adventurous spirit.

And speaking of going on an adventure….

Can I improvise my trip to the Moroccan desert or should I book in advance?

Unless you are pressed for time, book everything you can from home: transportation, experiences and, of course, accommodation.

Although Morocco is a safe country and its people are very friendly, it is no fun to have surprises such as ending up sleeping with 20 other people in a plastic haima or taking twice as long to arrive because you have ridden in a vehicle that makes a thousand stops.

Moreover, if you want to make sure that your trip to the biggest desert of Morocco as Erg Chebbi is an unforgettable experience, you can hire one of our tours or contact us and we will design one for you.

Are you in?

There are plenty of reasons to visit Morocco and among them is to taste its typical dishes. Recipes are full of flavor and aroma that reflect the evolution of its people.

If you have been following us, you will know that throughout its long history, the most diverse civilizations have passed through these lands; from the Phoenicians, Romans, or Berbers -who still live here- to the French and Spanish.

This abundance of cultures, together with its geographical variety, results in a tasty cuisine made with ingredients provided by the land.

In short, the typical dishes of Morocco are a compendium of products and culinary techniques that have been simmering for thousands of years and are part of the traveling experience in the country.

Today we bring you a compilation of the most representative ones.

Shall we start?

Let’s go!

Before talking about the typical dishes of Morocco…

Before getting into the most characteristic dishes of Morocco, it is worthwhile to go through the highlights of Moroccan gastronomy.

If we had to highlight just one of the particularities of Moroccan cuisine, we would choose the spices, as they are used in both sweet and savory dishes and they have an enormous variety.

The best known is Ras el Hanout, a mixture of about twenty spices including cinnamon, chili, cardamom, cloves, coriander, and cumin, although it has a thousand variations.

A word of advice: take advantage and buy here to take home the best olfactory souvenir you will ever find.

In addition to spices, it is also very typical to use fresh herbs such as coriander, parsley, and mint. Thus, stews and salads are seasoned, two of the most common dishes on the tables of Moroccan homes and restaurants.

As emblematic recipes, we have the tajines, which are stews cooked in iconic clay pots with the elongated lid and couscous, steamed wheat semolina accompanied by vegetables, legumes, and meat.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a look at the top 10 typical Moroccan dishes.

Top 10 typical Moroccan dishes

Now it’s time: let’s go to the 10 recipes from Morocco that you must try.

#1 Tajin

As we have already advanced, the number one dish of Moroccan gastronomy is the tajine. It’s a traditional stew whose recipe is passed from generation to generation and which is cooked in a clay pot with meat, generally lamb, chicken, or beef.

Add vegetables, spices and if you like nuts, it is also delicious.

Moroccan Dishes

#2 Couscous

Couscous is another of Morocco’s must-try dishes.

It is composed of a good portion of the steamed wheat semolina we were talking about before, lamb, chicken or fish, vegetables, spices and all generously sprinkled with sauce.

#3 Pastela

Also known as pastilla or bastilla, pastela is a puff pastry filled with a surprising combination of ingredients. It has poultry meat -usually chicken or pigeon-, almonds, egg, and spices.

So far so normal, right?

Well, here comes the extraordinary part: it is covered with powdered sugar and cinnamon. In this way, the combination of sweet and salty gives it a very peculiar flavor.

#4 Harira

The harira is a thick and comforting soup thanks to its combination of lentils, tomato, lamb meat, and sometimes noodles. And spices, of course.

This hearty and nutritious recipe is known because it is traditionally consumed during Ramadan, although it is also eaten throughout the year.

#5 Mechoui

Although there are many typical Moroccan dishes suitable for vegetarians and vegans because of their abundance of vegetables, there are others that there is no way to adapt in any way; this is the case of Mechoui, which is lamb and only lamb.

It is slow-roasted in a subway oven, which gives it an extra juicy and tender texture. This meat lover’s delight is especially popular on festive occasions and celebrations.

#6 Briouats

Briouats are triangular or cylindrical pastries made with filo dough and filled with almost anything, sweet or savory. What briouats or briwats share in all their variants are spices. They are used sparingly in their preparation.

Stuffed with chicken, minced meat, seafood or almost anything, they are crunchy snacks that are usually eaten as an appetizer.

Food in Morocco

#7 Zaalouk

Zaalouk is a salad based on roasted eggplant cooked with garlic, cumin, and paprika and is also known as eggplant caviar; with such a name you can imagine that it is one of the most popular dishes in Morocco.

Although it can be drunk hot or cold, we recommend that you try it at room temperature.

#8 Khobz

The bread… Oh, the bread!

If your bread is religion, in Morocco you will enjoy khobz: round, flat, and firm.

Perfect to help you eat alone with it.

That is, in the traditional Moroccan way, which is with your hands, without cutlery. Maybe the first day you find it uncomfortable or dirty because you are not used to it, but when you get the hang of it you will see that the food tastes better.

#9 Sfenj

We can not fail to include in this top ten of typical Moroccan dishes some for the sweet tooth.

Among its large catalog of desserts and other sweet recipes, you have to try the sfenj: it is shaped like a fritter and its flavor is very reminiscent of churros, not in vain these Moroccan doughnuts share with churros all the ingredients, but incorporate yeast and are fried in round.

And to top it off: sugar or honey on top.

#10 Kaab El Ghzal or gazelle horns

With the permission of the famous chebakia, we are going to include in this list another Moroccan sweet: gazelle horns.

They are so-called because they have a half-moon shape reminiscent of a gazelle’s horn. They are filled with dates and nuts with cinnamon and wrapped in a soft almond dough, moistened with orange blossom water.

Pure delicatessen.

And to finish with the most typical Moroccan dishes…

We cannot finish this post without mentioning mint tea. It will be impossible not to try it if you travel to Morocco. Alone or eating, in the afternoon or in the morning, tea is a constant in Moroccan daily life.

But it is not tea and that’s it: it is prepared with green tea, fresh mint leaves, and sugar. And to complete the ritual, it is served in small glasses and on high so that it can be aired. This is how the canons dictate it.

If you come to Kam Kam Dunes, you will be able to taste it in the traditional way, just like all the typical Moroccan dishes we prepare in our kitchen.

A tour in Morocco is a fantastic experience because in only a few days you will visit places influenced by various civilizations.

From Phoenicians and Romans to French and Spaniards have passed through the country. And the Berbers, of course. Just to mention some of the cultures that have left their mark on the country.

A tour in Morocco has the added bonus of affordable prices. In addition, it is very well connected by land, sea, and air. And not least: its people are some of the most hospitable you will find anywhere in the world.

The issue is the same as always: where to start because there is a lot to do.

That’s why in this post we bring you some of the must-sees that every tour in Morocco must have.

Let’s get down to business.

The essentials of a good Morocco tour

Let’s start by saying that they are not all there are, nor are they all there are. Morocco is very large and it is difficult to choose.

Unless you are staying for a month or more, which is highly unlikely.

What this list does contain are places that are a must on any route through Morocco. Those that you have to visit sometime in your life.

Let’s begin.

#1 Casablanca: a good starting point for a tour of Morocco

We wanted to put Casablanca at the top of the list because it is the largest city in the country because geographically it is an excellent starting point for a route through Morocco, and because there are many flights going there.

You have to know something important. It is a city where djellabas coexist with western tie suits and branded accessories.

You know, Morocco is a country of contrasts.

As is the case with so many historic port metropolises, its architecture is eclectic: with mosques, medinas, modern buildings, and French colonial Art Deco buildings.

How to deal with such a monster?

One way to do it to capture all its essence is to walk around the old medina and the ramparts. Then you can go to the new medina, in the Quartier Habous. By the way, put yourself in “bargaining mode”, you’re going to need it.

There are two unique sites in Casablanca that are well worth being on any tour of Morocco:

  • The Great Mosque of Hassan II for being the only one in Morocco where non-Muslims can enter, the second largest religious building in the world, second only to Mecca!
  • The Jewish Museum of Casablanca, the only Jewish museum in the Muslim world and where you can see the weight of Jewish heritage in the history of the country.

#2 Marrakech: a must on any Morocco tour

Yes, Marrakech has to be there. And not only in a tour of Morocco but on your bucket list.

It may seem exaggerated but the truth is that Marrakech is a feast for the senses. Chaotic and precious at the same time has plans for all tastes and budgets, but always maintains an enigmatic point that engages.

Here the important thing is to let yourself be carried away in activities such as getting lost in the medina and trying some of the sweet or savory delicacies sold in the many stalls that you will find along the way.

You can start your visit to the medina from the bustling and exotic Jemaa el Fna Square, which you should visit both day and night. Or at sunset, which also has its own.

Another winning plan is to approach the Bay Palace and explore its courtyards, halls, and chambers.

Staying in a Moroccan riad, indulging in a hammam or spending some time admiring the historic Le Jardin Secret are experiences with a mix of culture and pleasure that in Marrakech are lived in a special way.

Marrakech Tour

#3 The Sahara: no tour of Morocco is complete without it

From Marrakech to Erg Chebbi is an interesting itinerary with several worthwhile stops before reaching the Sahara. It is one of the most powerful attractions of a Morocco tour.

If you have time, make a stop to visit the cinematic and timeless Kasbah Ait Ben Hadu and Ouarzazat or Desert Gate at least, which are two symbols of the country.

But, what we were getting to: Erg Chebbi is the desert in Morocco with the largest dunes.

The nearest town is Merzouga, the last sign of civilization you see before reaching your accommodation. Needless to say, we recommend you to come to Kam Kam dunes. A bivouac where we have individual haimas with private bathrooms included that do not lack detail.

The unmissable adventure here is to ride a camel for a ride across the vast expanses of sand, watch the sunset and return to the camp to enjoy a fantastic dinner under a starry sky.

The silence of the desert, a cup of tea or a glass of wine in hand and a fire in the middle of the Sahara night… It is that kind of experience that makes you have one of those moments of… “How far away is my home”.

Sahara Desert Tour

#4 The Dades Gorges: the must-see valley on a tour of Morocco

Morocco’s nature is fascinating. Therefore, any tour should not miss some of its most characteristic places such as the Dades Valley and Todra Gorges.

Also known as the Road of the Thousand Kasbahs, it is a spectacular itinerary where you can cross winding roads that test the sense of perspective, tones in the full range of earth tones and meet hundreds of kasbahs that dot the route.

If you are the intrepid type, you can drive yourself, and if you prefer to observe the scenery, we can take you with an experienced driver. He knows the terrain like the back of his hand.

#5 Fez: the icing on the cake of a Morocco tour with a little bit of everything

After the feast of nature in the Sahara and the Dades Valley, Fez is a wonderful place to come back to reality.

As a good Moroccan city, street life is an experience in itself. And yes, you should go in with the mindset that getting disoriented is part of the fun. You are (almost) certain to lose spatial reference at some point.

What you should not miss in Fez is the Chouwara tannery, a place where the dyes and leather give off a peculiar smell that will stay in your olfactory memory forever.

Touring the medieval old city and its vibrant medina, marveling at the emblematic tiles of the Bou Inania or Attarine Medersas, or taking pictures of the façade of the seven gates of the Royal Palace are three of the must-sees of Fez.

Morocco tour visiting the Medina

There is not only one Morocco tour

We finish this list of essential places that should be included in a route through Morocco as we started it: recognizing that it is not easy to condense the best of the country.

We are aware that we have left out wonders such as Tetouan or Meknes, which are also World Heritage Sites. And there can be as many itineraries in Morocco as there are people.

What is clear is that any of them must include at least one imperial city and the desert; these two are non-negotiable.

If you want to make a Morocco tour according to your expectations or join one of our regular tours, just contact us and we will get to work.

If you are looking for what to do in Morocco on vacation, this is the place for you.

We propose the seven top plans you can sign up for to immerse yourself in its culture, enjoy nature, stimulate your senses, and have life experiences reserved for getaways with character.

Are we going with those plans to do in Morocco?

#1 Watching and admiring the night sky of the Moroccan desert

Yes, we start strong: for one of the star adventures (sorry for the easy joke) of Kam Kam Dunes.

But we are not shy to put this plan as the first one to do in Morocco because we know that it is an experience that never disappoints.

Climbing a huge dune at sunset to contemplate the transformation of its chromatic play until night falls, savoring the silence of the Erg Chebbi desert, and having an expert give you some tips to understand the firmament… PLAN-OF-THE-CENTURY

What to do in Morocco when you travel

#2 Morocco desert tour on the back of… A camel!

As you can hear: a camel ride is an unforgettable experience you can have in Morocco.

To enjoy it to the fullest, just pay attention to:

  • Make sure they are well cared for camels, like those of Kam Kam Dunes, who are like family.
    like, family.
  • Relax and let yourself be carried away by their movements.
  • Absorb all that you can see from above.

And with this, you only have to choose what time you want to live the adventure.

#3 Getting lost in a medina

Undoubtedly, one of the plans to do in Morocco is to wander through one of its medinas. And get lost. Yes get lost, because they are like a labyrinth and sometimes you do not recognize anything around you.

And you don’t know how, but suddenly you find your place again. That’s part of its charm!

Which Moroccan medinas do we recommend?

Obviously, Marrakech, the Red City, is not to be missed for the variety of products offered by its hundreds of stalls scattered throughout its structure of alleys.

If you want something less “obvious” and you are lucky enough to visit other Moroccan cities, Fez and Chefchaouen are also special; the former because it is the largest in the world and the latter because it is dominated by their characteristic shade of blue.

And if you go in Ramadan do not miss them at night, when the locals go out to eat and there is a very authentic atmosphere.

What to visit in Morocco

#4 Take a gastronomic tour of the medina of Fez

If there is an element that makes a trip around is the typical food of each territory we visit, so in this list of top plans to do in Morocco can not miss one that makes you enjoy Moroccan cuisine in all its splendor.

And that plan is to take a tour of the medina of Fez to taste the tastiest Moroccan dishes.

Moroccan cuisine is a sum of the influences of all the civilizations that have inhabited the country, from the Berbers to the Arabs, passing through the French, Turks, Jews…

Be warned, if you are a bit picky about food, this may not be your favorite thing to do in Morocco. But if you can get rid of those prejudices you bring from home, we assure you that this can be one of the experiences of your life.

Bread, various stews loaded with spices, couscous, homemade sweets, and many other delicacies await you in a setting with aromas that make you disconnect from everything.

#5 Hiking in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco

And speaking of disconnecting, there is another super plan to do in Morocco: a hike in the High Atlas.

As saying that is like saying nothing because the High Atlas crosses the country and is about 1,000 kilometers long, we recommend that you combine the car with stretches on foot through the Dades Gorges, a sinuous work of erosion that leaves you with your mouth open.

This activity is included in many of our tours because it is a great opportunity to experience something new and exciting, observe up close how diverse Moroccan nature is, and learn about the history and traditions of the Berber people.

#6 Immerse yourself in the most literary Tangier

Let’s go with a cultural plan to do in Morocco, let it not be said that here there is not for all tastes.

Like all cross-border cities, throughout its history, Tangier has received inhabitants from different origins in search of shelter, as happened when the Second World War broke out.

How could it not inspire novels of all kinds?

That is precisely the plan we propose: that you look for the Tangier of Paul Bowles, Truman Capote, Ángel Vázquez, or Ramón Buenaventura, that one with an international flavor regardless of the rules of the political situation.

Sightseeing in Morocco

#7 Excursion to an oasis

Did you know that Morocco is home to some of the largest oases in the world?

We propose the SafSaf Oasis, one of the least traveled and unexpected and you can go from the desert. In fact, we offer it to our guests because it is one of the most exotic things to do in Morocco for the beauty of the place, but also for the sense of adventure along the way.

To get there from Kam Kam Dunes, you take the Dakar rally road, encountering nomadic villages along the way until you reach the border with Algeria, where the oasis with its palm trees and waterfalls is located.

It is surprising that in the middle of the arid desert, this habitat can coexist.

And so far this list of things to do in Morocco is for those who like to get off the beaten path, get to know the essence of the countries they visit, and live fulfilling experiences.

Well, we would have to sleep in the middle of the desert in a Berber tent.

But not just anyone, but one like the Kam Kam Dunes, which are made in the traditional way, decorated in a boho chic style, with their own bathroom and comfortable beds with top quality linens.

If you want us to design for you a trip that combines a stay in our camp with one or more of these things to do in Morocco, contact us and we will organize everything.

Thinking of coming to Kam Kam Dunes in the Sahara Desert?

If you are reading these lines, it is definitely going through your mind.

For the feeling of immensity that walking through the dunes gives you, for seeing the starry sky in the night darkness, for its overwhelming silence, for knowing the Berber lifestyle…

At Kam Kam Dunes we know well what sensations this place arouses: for almost a decade we have been receiving travelers from all over the world who choose us to stay in haimas built in the traditional way but with all the comforts, starting with a private bathroom.

But not only that, but we have also been organizing tours in Morocco and activities for all levels of adventure for nearly ten years because here you can do everything you can imagine.

And precisely because of this trajectory, we know that reaching us and our experiences awakens doubts in even the most well-traveled of mortals.

That’s why in this post we have gathered the questions we are most frequently asked about how to book Kam Kam Dunes and that, almost certainly, you must be asking yourself too. Let’s go with them.

Everything you need to know to book at Kam Kam Dunes

As we know that our camp concept is a bit confusing when it comes to booking with us, let’s start at the beginning.

What is Kam Kam Dunes?

Kam Kam Dunes is a luxury camp in the heart of Erg Chebbi, the largest desert in Morocco, where you can stay and live adventures such as a camel ride or ride the dunes on a quad.

In short, it works like any other accommodation: you book and you come.

Whether you arrive driving a rented car, with an independent driver, or by public transport, it’s up to you, because the prices of moving around in Morocco are varied.

To help you understand the magnitude of the movement, imagine a “V” and place from left to right and from top to bottom: Marrakech, Fez, and at the lower vertex Kam Kam Dunes, in the Merzouga area.

Have you got it? Well, that’s the move to keep in mind when booking at Kam Kam Dunes.

How to get to Kam Kam Dunes

If reading the previous section has made you a world of trouble organizing your own transportation to our camp, don’t worry, we’ll set it up for you in a jiffy.

You hire a minitour and that’s it.

You take care of booking the accommodation in the main cities like Marrakech or Fez and we take care of bringing you comfortably to the desert.

I’m sure you have a lot of questions about this option. Let’s get down to business.

How long does it take to get from Marrakech and Fez to Kam Kam Dunes?

The route between Marrakech and Kam Kam Dunes takes about 10 hours and to Fez about 8 hours.

I leave here some slides that summarize very quickly how to get to Kam Kam Dunes from Marrakech:

And here I leave you the same but starting in Fez. What options do you have? Do you prefer to travel on your own or on a prepared tour? I explain here a little bit:

Let there be no panic, let…

Are the routes to Kam Kam Dunes non-stop?

The trip between Fez and Kam Kam Dunes is usually done without stops, yes – well, logically technical stops are made, but not to stay overnight-.

On the other hand, the trip from Marrakech is another matter: if you wish, we can plan your trip from Marrakech in one go, but it is advisable to make a stop to sleep in Dades.

And if you go with children, elderly people, people with reduced mobility or you are simply a lover of slow traveling, we recommend you always stop.

If you decide on this option, we will book the accommodation on the way, don’t worry. To clarify your ideas and make a decision, the best thing to do is to take a look at all our tours and what follows.

Quickly book your trip to the desert

If you want to book a 3 or 4 days tour to the Sahara Desert click on the following video:

What days are we closed?

Yes, we are also sometimes closed. Kam Kam closes its doors during the summer, that is, in July and August.

Honestly, it is very hot in summer and we don’t take advantage of it at all. Besides, this way we have a little break. Our favorite month to travel to the desert is (without a doubt) October. I’ll explain in a moment the 4 reasons to travel in October.

Is it possible to travel with children to the desert?

YEEEEEES. In fact, the children are usually the ones who have the best time. Besides, we always try to find activities that they like as well.

It is true that if you do a tour, it can be a bit long for children. I leave this answer for you to decide whether to travel with children to the desert.

We hope that after reading this post you will have a clear idea of how to come to Kam Kam Dunes to experience the desert as it should be.

If so, you are late in making your reservation, Kam Kam Dunes is a bivouac with only 12 private haimas and they fly.

And if we have missed anything, contact us and we will help you quickly.

The price of a trip to Morocco is like everything in life: it depends.

Because if you want, this is a country that works luxury beautifully. And when we fall into certain categories, it depends on what you like to pay tribute to.

Since we assume that most of us are looking to travel at the best price… Let’s talk about what would be a good value-for-money trip to Morocco.

Grab your calculator, because when you finish reading you can have an estimate of how much a trip to Morocco might cost you.

Let’s get down to business.

General considerations on the price of a trip to Morocco

Let’s start by saying that this is a country where everything is quite affordable. The cost of living is gradually catching up with the European average. Prices are still kinder than in other destinations.

In fact, that’s one of the reasons why vacationing in Morocco is such a great idea.

That said, it is important to know that in high season everything goes up. Normal, isn’t it?

And when is high season?

Very simple: just consider what is the best time to travel to Morocco. And voila, there you have it. High season is from November to March because that’s when temperatures are more bearable, especially if you’re coming to the desert.

Those are the most popular months, there’s no doubt about it. But, and here’s the trick to getting a better price for everything, October is also a great month. And the same goes for April and May.

And to finish with the preview of how much it will cost you to travel to Morocco, we recommend that before calculating you decide what concept of experience you want. For example, if you want the desert, which is the jewel in the crown of the country, and some imperial cities.

If you do not have it very clear, you might be interested in the post from a few months ago in which we point out four travel ideas for sightseeing in Morocco and fell surrendered at his feet.

Now let’s get down to that price breakdown of a trip to Morocco.

Price of a trip to Morocco: transportation to the country

Traveling to Morocco from Spain is easy and fast. And of course, that makes the prices very good. And that is why there are many travelers from outside the Iberian Peninsula who take it as a link to come to Morocco.

The ways to get to the country are by plane or boat, that’s all. Well or swimming, but I think it is not the best option.

Even if you like to travel on your own and want to make a road trip with your own vehicle, you will have to end up riding a boat to cross the strait from Algeciras, Tarifa, Malaga, or Almeria.

How much does it cost to travel to Morocco

As for the prices, the best thing to do is to enter a search engine that compares prices. Then go to the companies’ websites to check them -or to buy them-.

But, as a guideline, here are the average prices for flights and ships:

  • A round-trip flight Madrid-Marrakech + 1 suitcase, can cost about 120 € with Ryanair.
  • A round trip ticket for one person + 1 car Algeciras-Tangier, can cost 290 € with Balearia.

Let’s move on to transportation.

Cost of a trip to Morocco: getting around the country

Travel in Morocco is cheap in general, that’s the truth.

The cheapest way to get from one city to another is by bus. To give you an idea, a trip from Marrakech to Merzouga, the closest town to Kam Kam Dunes, costs about 35 €.

It is also the slowest -it takes 15 hours- and uncomfortable because it is a shared transport and makes countless stops.

As far as the train is concerned, it is usually a bit more expensive than the bus but also more comfortable. Morocco’s railway network links the country’s main cities and even has several high-speed lines.

The catch is that you will then have to change to a bus or a car to get to the exact point you want to go to.

And speaking of cars, this is the most recommended means of transport to travel around Morocco at an affordable price and in the most direct way; you can rent a car for an average price of 78 € per day.

Add to that the gasoline and the insurance: the insurance can cost you an additional 20 € per day. As for the price of fuel, it’s better not to say anything, because the subject is burning.

Another option is to hire a tour with us in which an experienced driver makes stops at points of interest. In the meantime, he tells you details and anecdotes about the places you visit.

If this sounds like glory to you, contact us and we will give you a quote, we have several routes.

Price of a trip to Morocco: accommodation

The price of accommodation is a factor that has a lot of weight in a trip to Morocco and anywhere.

In the case of Morocco, it changes a lot if you want to stay in “standard” hotels or in more special places like the Moroccan riads in the cities and the camps like Kam Kam Dunes in the desert.

So that we don’t show our colors, we will give you average prices for each of these three accommodations:

  • Hotel in Marrakech: 240 € per night in a double room.
  • Riad in Marrakech: 60 € per night in a double room including breakfast.
  • Camp in the desert: 180 € per night in a double tent with breakfast and dinner included.

As we said, these figures are within the average and you will surely find accommodations above and below these amounts: the date, the quality of the rooms or haimas if you have a private or shared bathroom… there are lots of variables that can affect the price of your trip to Morocco.

How much does accommodation cost in Morocco

Now that you know how much a trip to Morocco costs…

Having seen the most important items in the budget of a trip to Morocco, we can not fail to recommend that you take good account of its delicious cuisine away from franchises and chain restaurants.

Do yourself a favor and try Moroccan gastronomy in authentic places. They are also cheaper: a full meal per person can cost you between 5 and 10€.

And finally, don’t skimp on activities. There are activities for all budgets and it is what fills you up the most, the secret ingredient that makes your visit more than just a trip, it becomes an experience.

We know it well because we organize all kinds of adventures; camel rides at sunset, quad excursions in the dunes, or night raids to admire the megastar desert sky and we see the faces of the staff when they enjoy such experiences.

Select well what you want to do to squeeze your trip, make customized planning and you will see how the price of traveling to Morocco is more than affordable.

And if you have any doubts, just ask, that’s what we’re here for.

Staying in a Moroccan riad is to the cities what sleeping in a camp like Kam Kam Dunes is to the desert.

In other words: stay in a typical Moroccan building that will make your visit to the country as authentic as possible. It will allow you to experience the exoticism of these lands and feel more like a traveler than a tourist.

We admit that maybe we’re being a little bit too obvious and that our favorite urban accommodations are riads. Since we’re here to help you clear your head, let’s break down the big question: Moroccan riad or hotel?

Let’s get down to it.

What is a Moroccan riad

Let’s start at the beginning: what is a Moroccan riad.

A riad is a typical construction of the cities where traditionally several branches of the same family stayed.

While it is true that most of these buildings have been converted into tourist accommodation, especially in larger cities such as Fez and Marrakech, this is a custom that still occurs and it is not uncommon for the same house to be inhabited by grandparents and grandchildren.

And of course, to accommodate such a large number of personnel, they are usually large buildings. With at least five or six rooms.

These rooms are distributed around a central courtyard where there is usually a fountain and abundant vegetation. In the hottest areas there is even a swimming pool to cool off.

Image of a swimming pool at a Riad in Morocco

To complete the atmosphere: colorful tiles with geometric shapes, mosaics, carved wood with Arabic inscriptions, carpets…

In short, you will find all the elements of typical Moroccan decoration in a Moroccan riad.

Where are they located? They are usually located inside the medina of the cities. It is a clear advantage to know the historical centers because you are already in the very heart of the city.

But let’s not jump to any conclusions and let’s dive deeper into the pros and cons of a Moroccan riad.

Advantages and disadvantages of staying in a Moroccan riad

If you are a regular reader of our blog, you will already know that for us, immersing ourselves in the traditions of the places we visit, for example, sleeping in a Moroccan riad, is a must.

However, as we also have a lot of experience hosting people from all over the world and accompanying them on tours in Morocco, we also know that there are a few things it is better to know before choosing to stay in a Moroccan riad or hotel.

Take notes:

Advantages of staying in a Moroccan riad

Let’s take a look at its main advantages:

  1. As we said before, if you stay in a riad, you are inside the medina, which is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating places in Moroccan cities.
  2. Although there are luxurious riads that can cost an arm and a leg, there are also affordable ones; they may be more modestly decorated, but they are equally authentic and comfortable.
  3. And speaking of decoration, what is certain is that a Moroccan riad is always dressed with traditional objects, textiles, and furnishings creating a special atmosphere.
  4. The feeling of peace you experience when you move from the bustle of the medina to the silence that the walls of the riad provide.
  5. The treatment is more personal and personalized.
  6. Staying in a Moroccan riad is a unique and unforgettable experience. It makes you feel part of the rhythm of the place you are visiting.

We’ll leave it here, we got too excited and we are trying to put objectivity in this analysis.

Disadvantages of staying in a Moroccan riad

Yes, yes, we are also able to see the less positive points of sleeping in a Moroccan riad:

  1. As we have said, riads are usually located in the historic center, so if you are going to stay in one as your headquarters and travel around Morocco from there, you might want to stay in something less central.
  2. Riyads are more scarce than hotels, so finding one that lives up to your expectations can become a somewhat tedious task.
  3. If for whatever reason you can’t go without going to the gym or you need rooms for teleworking and meetings, in a riad, nanai de la China.
  4. If you don’t like Moroccan décor and prefer Western standards, you will probably be better off in a chain hotel than in a riad, although there are many that have made a very interesting cultural hybrid.

Well, well, well, if you are still not clear whether you want riad or hotel, we continue analyzing them.

Image of a courtyard of a riad in Morocco.

Advantages and disadvantages of staying in a hotel in Morocco

Like everything in life, hotels have two sides:

The advantages of staying in a hotel in Morocco

Let’s start by commenting that in a country with a culture with as much personality as Morocco, hotel standards are very different from Western ones, so research well where you are going before booking to avoid surprises.

That said, here are the advantages of this type of accommodation:

  1. Hotels are generally easier to find than riads because of their size. In addition, they are on most of the booking platforms you are familiar with.
  2. Hotels usually have all the amenities and services you might want or need, such as parking, a swimming pool, a gym, or a spa.
  3. Most of them are air-conditioned, which is very much appreciated in the hot season.
  4. If you are one of those who prefer to go at your own pace all the time, in a hotel, it is more impersonal.

And on the other side of the coin, we have….

The disadvantages of staying in a hotel in Morocco

It would be enough to turn around the pros of the riad, but here is a summary of the disadvantages of a Moroccan hotel:

Do you have it clearer now?

Image of a Moroccan hotel living room

Moroccan riad or hotel: which is better for you?

The answer to this question is a “it depends”. Why? Because each person and their circumstances are different.

The riad is the same as when you come to the desert of Erg Chebbi to live the experience of spending the night in a unique environment with its silence, its play of light at sunset and immense starry skies: when it’s time to sleep, everyone prefers their own thing.

However, we also know that staying in a camp like Kam Kam Dunes, in the middle of the dunes, with Berber tents made in the traditional way but with all the comforts, has nothing to do with staying in a hotel or in a camp with PVC tents in a village on the perimeter of the desert.

It is one thing to stay and another to immerse yourself in an authentic and exotic experience.

The same with the Moroccan riad.

There is undoubtedly a lot to visit in Fez.

Let’s think that it is the oldest imperial city in Morocco, founded around the year 791. It is on the right side of the Fez river, and several civilizations have passed through it since then.

It has been a refuge for Andalusians, Arabs, and Jews throughout its long history. Besides being part of the French protectorate until four days ago, as the one says since it was not independent until 1956.

This journey is why there are so many places to see and plans to do in Fez.

To make it easier for you, we have prepared a selection of places to stop in Fez.

Let’s get down to business.

What to see in Fez in each area

You should know that it is divided into three zones. These belong to different periods and are distributed from north to south as follows:

  • Fez el-Bali is the oldest part of the city and where most of the must-see sights in Fez are located.
  • Fez el-Jdid, founded a few centuries later, has jewels to see in Fez, such as the seven gates of the Royal Palace.
  • The Ville Nouvelle, as you can guess from its name, was created at the time of the French protectorate. It has nothing to do with the other two areas.

In addition to these three distinct parts, the city has other residential areas. With all there is to do in Fez, our advice is to skip them.

Now that we are in place let’s bring out the best of each zone.

What to visit in Fez in Fez el-Bali

As we said, Fez el-Bali is the oldest area of Fez and a real-time trip. It is in an excellent state of preservation.

It is a large medina with more than 9,000 labyrinthine streets through which you can let yourself go and discover corners. You find yourself among motorcycles, donkeys, and carts carrying goods, as there is no car traffic.

There are several must-sees in this gigantic universe. We recommend that you do not obsess about checking any list but explore. You will find your must.

One of them is the Chouwara tannery: if there is something picturesque, different, and authentic to see in Fez is this place.

It is the most extensive of the four remaining in Fez and impresses you. And not only because of the powerful smell given off by the number of containers with dyes -and other ingredients such as lime and pigeon droppings- that are there.

Smells and odors aside, the artisanal process and the chromatic range for dyeing the skins are unique.

In addition to the tanneries, in Fez el-Bali, you have to drop by the Nejjarine and Seffarine squares for their bustling people and famous buildings. And also stop by one of its medersas – schools of the Koran – such as the Medersa Bou Inania or the Medersa Attarine.

Its decorations, full of symbolic tiles and marquetry, are in such good condition.Yyou feel you are in another era.

But as I said: to experience the Fez el-Bali medina, wander without pressure through its dirty streets dodging the locals doing their own thing, enjoy the spectacle of the souk, stop contemplating its mosques, and open all your senses.

Imagen de la mezquita de Fez

What to visit in Fez el-Jdid

This other medina, built about four centuries later next to that of Fez el-Bali, is another must-see in Fez.

As we said, it is next to the oldest and has a very similar structure with its surrounding wall and a network of narrow streets. We could say that getting lost is almost the best thing that can happen to soak up its essence.

Despite their similarities, the two medinas differ mainly by two elements. They are on every list of the essentials of Fez: the Royal Palace and the Jewish Quarter or Mellah.

With the Royal Palace, you finish early because you can’t visit it, but its seven doors are lovely and very photogenic. So, go there and live your Instagram moment.

We know it sounds very superficial. The bronze coffered ceilings flanking the fortress are so beautiful that they make you want to immortalize them.

Que ver en Fez, el palacio real

As far as the Jewish Quarter is concerned, it is not lacking in places with its flavor. Its architectural style could not be further from the Moroccan canons. In contrast to the hermeticism of the Muslim buildings, the Jewish ones have unique iron and wood balconies.

For all these reasons, strolling through the Fez el-Jdid medina is a must in Fez.

And if you can fit it into your travel schedule, look for a restaurant or Riad overlooking the medina where you can have a mint tea or enjoy a sunset dinner; Moroccan cuisine is delicious.

What to visit in Ville Nouvelle

And if the medinas have some differences among themselves, the neighborhood of French origin has them all.

Starting with its origin, which is no longer in the Middle Ages but the contemporary era, and continuing with its structure and style, totally European, the Ville Nouvelle has nothing in common with Fez el-Bali or Fez el-Jdid.

Imagen de de la ville nouvelle en Fez. Que se puede ver en Fez

With Hassan II Avenue as the backbone, in this neighborhood where the most economically powerful foreigners and locals live, you can find the headquarters of institutions, banks, and Western-style hotels.

Huge avenues, great shopping, and traffic, as much as you want.

The truth is that this neighborhood does not have much mystery. It is curious to see the contrast between the other areas to visit in Fez and this newly created.

And so far, this review of the best things to see in Fez, a destination that we include in many of our tours where we take you to the desert of Morocco and the most emblematic places of the country, such as this imperial city.

What, when are you coming?

You may have heard that travel Morocco is in itself an adventure that is part of the plan.

Confirmed: that’s right.

So how to get around Morocco is a matter to pay attention to before leaving home. It is not that its roads are dangerous or that there is no public transport. But it is very likely that at some point you will be tempted to take a 4×4 on your own, even if it is just for a little while.

That’s why we have prepared this special, so that traveling in Morocco will be an unforgettable experience in a positive way and save you surprises.

Let’s get started.

First, decide where you want to go and the days you have available

Before going through the options for getting around Morocco. It is crucial that you think about what kind of trip you want, how much time you have and the places you are going to visit.

In case you don’t have it all clear, take a look at the post four ideas for sightseeing in Morocco. Once you have decided where and how to visit Morocco, you will know the best way to get there.

But let’s start with how to get there. It is a factor that will condition the way you travel through the territory.

How to get to travel Morocco

Traveling to Morocco is very easy thanks to its proximity. Did you know that there are only 14 km between the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco?

Although the alternatives are obvious, here they go: plane or boat.

For short stays, it is best to come by plane and, once inside the country, rent a car to travel in Morocco on your own or hire a tour like the ones we do in Kam Kam Dunes.

Our tours include transportation with a private driver and car, so you no longer have to worry about how to travel in Morocco.

If you have a longer vacation, you can consider coming by boat crossing the strait with your own vehicle. In this case you will be very interested in what we are going to tell you next.

But first, we must comment that if for whatever reason you are not traveling from Spain, it is best to go to any European airport with direct flights to Marrakech and from there move to where you have planned.

You are already in Morocco. What now?

Traveling by car in Morocco is one of the best experiences in the world.

Travel Morocco

If you’ve decided that going on your own is worth the extra planning involved, here are the options you have for traveling in Morocco on your own between and within cities.

Traveling in Morocco between cities

Let’s take a look at the most common ways to travel around Morocco:

#1 Traveling in Morocco by car or motorhome

If you have not traveled with your own vehicle there is another options. Renting a car or motorhome is a great option because it gives you a lot of freedom.

You just need to pay attention to the same as if you rent in any other country. Bring the driver’s license of the person who will be behind the wheel, pay with credit card -not debit card- and decide what kind of insurance you want.

Otherwise, leave your adventurous spirit in charge and keep your eyes open, because on the roads of Morocco you may encounter other vehicles, but also animals or people on foot from one place to another.

This is mostly on secondary roads and highways, of course. On highways it is not usual.

And refueling? Well, the same thing. On the highways there is no problem, but on the secondary roads you never know for sure where you will be able to fill up.

As for going in a van, the only thing to keep in mind if you are going off the main roads, is that there will be trails for which its dimensions and wheels are not prepared.

And that if you want to come to the Moroccan desert, you will have to park the motorhome in the nearest town and continue by 4×4.

Desert driving experience

#2 Traveling in Morocco by motorcycle

Traveling in Morocco with your motorcycle is a highly recommended experience if you like to go on the road.

Just like driving a car, you need to have all the documentation related to the driver and the vehicle in order:

  • Driver’s documentation: valid driver’s license and passport -minimum six months validity.
  • Motorcycle documentation: registration certificate in the driver’s name, insurance and green card. And if it is rented, the contract.

And don’t forget to give it a complete overhaul before you come, especially if you plan to leave the asphalt roads.

#3 Traveling in Morocco by bus

Moving from one city to another in Morocco by bus is undoubtedly the most economical way.

But of course, it is also the least fast because you have to stick to their schedules. ¡They are not always on time!

Apart from these considerations, moving by bus in Morocco is very safe and has the advantage that there are multiple companies that cover routes between the most important cities and also reach the most remote villages.

#4 Traveling Morocco by train
